Yiŋiya Guyula, the independent representative for the Mulka electorate, has announced his immediate resignation from the Northern Territory parliament, condemning the Country Liberal Party's legislative direction as fundamentally at odds with human dignity.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Guyula said his decision was driven by a growing conviction that recent government policies have stripped away the basic humanity of Territorians, particularly for Aboriginal communities. He cited specific concerns over the CLP's approach to social welfare and land rights, arguing the measures are designed to marginalise rather than support.

The former educator and Yolŋu leader, who has served since 2016, said he could no longer in good conscience participate in a system that enacts laws he believes are harmful to the people he was elected to represent. His resignation takes effect immediately, leaving the seat of Mulka vacant and triggering a by-election.
